I was moving the tractor this evening and forgot to take the parking brake off (I do this frequently)anyway the brakes sort of popped and the tractor moved freely. I thought the brakes just popped off. I moved the tractor into the shop and went to set the brakes again and the pedals were still depressed. The pedals feel like there set but the brakes don't work. I think something broke in the linkage. Any ideas?

It is a problem as tractors have so much low end torque that you do not necessarily know that the brakes are on. My diesel truck has the same problem. I can easily move it with the parking brakes engaged. I hope that you have not broken a pad or something inside. I would check your external linkage and then determine what you have to do inside. Can you see if it is only one side or both? ....

Yesterday in the daylight I got a closer look at the linkage. As it turns out the linkage on the left rear got hung up on a pin that carries the mid mount mower. This pin is longer than it really needs to be and when it shifts towards the middle of the tractor it interferes with the brake linkage. I move the pin out and added a couple of washers and the problem is fixed. I think I do have a broken tooth on the lever that sets the brake as it does not want to hold the brake. I have to check that out closer and probably get a replacement for it. ....

crozier,
Your brakes may just need adjusted and are out of the range of the teeth for the parking brake to lock. ....

Your'e right in that it would act like you say. But one of the teeth were broken. There are 6 teeth and the one that held my brakes were broken off. It almost looks like that piece is made out of pot metal and the teeth are pretty small. I'll get it replaced under warranty but if it was out of warranty I think I'd make something a little heavier than the standard issue. ....
